In general, job hunters seek interviews using three different types of cover letters—networking, application and prospecting.
1. Networking:
Research and identify a few contacts from a targeted industry, and write to every one of them to inquire information on employment opportunity. Don’t ask for a job, but seek opinion and advice from the people in the industry.
In the opening paragraph of the cover document, specify your purpose clearly and the type of work you’re interested. Provide more information such as the level of job, working field and your specific interest. Many times key positions were filled up in this way.
2. Application:
Respond to a job opening advert with a personal promotion letter. With one full-page space of A4 sheet, sell your skill set, experience, career achievement and show your enthusiasm about the job and the potential company. Most importantly state how you can bring good value to the potential employer, and don’t forget to ask for an interview.
3. Prospecting:
Write to an employer to make inquiries about possible job vacancies. You should introduce yourself, state your intention, explain what type of job you’re targeting, and how you could contribute to the company. One good way to promote yourself is to link your skills, experiences and interest in a particular area with the value you can offer.
